Why Do I Nurse?

Have you ever stopped to think about why it is that you want to breastfeed?  Asked yourself, “Why do I nurse?”

I have asked this of myself so many times; what is it inside of me that drives me to nurse my babies, to nourish them with my body and my heart?  Why is it that I love to breastfeed?

I nurse because…

I nurse because of the look in his eyes.

I nurse because of the pride and the strength that comes from feeding my baby with my own body.

I nurse because of the protection it gives him.

I nurse because of the tiny fingers that hold on for dear life, and find comfort there.

I nurse because my milk is his perfect food.

I nurse because I want him to know that his mama is always here when he needs me.

I nurse because it is normal.

I nurse because, at one time I couldn’t and it tore me apart.

I nurse because it is beautiful.

I nurse because there are a very limited number of times that I get to experience this wonderful, beautiful, tumultous relationship in this life, and I don’t want to take a single second for granted.

I nurse because I’m lazy, and bottles are a lot of work.

I nurse because the smell of breastmilk on his breath is heaven.

I nurse because formula is expensive, and we don’t have a lot.

I nurse because I have been mesmerized by the idea of breastfeeding babies since I first learned that that’s what breasts do.

I nurse because I should, because I want to, and because I love every second.

Why do you nurse?
